Malaria Provides a Satisfying Aroma For Mosquitoes

According to a new study, parasite-infected blood is more attractive to malaria-transmitting mosquitoes. The insects suck up parasites as part of their meal and carry them on to another host. Previous research suggests that mosquitoes had a tendency to draw on malaria-infected people, but this latest study reveals a clue as to why. The researchers found that mosquitoes ate more when red blood cells had molecule released by parasites. However, their study showed that red blood cells produced greater amounts of carbon dioxide, and two airborne chemicals: aldehydes and monoterpenes. The study concluded the mosquitoes are attracted to their aromas.
