As the super typhoon Meranti made its landfall, east China's coastal cities of Quanzhou, Xiamen and Fuzhou have been battered by strong winds and heavy downpours.

Video footage taken from inside a car showed that roadside trees were swaying in powerful winds, traffic lights were tilted, while some large pieces of iron plates were fallen and scattered on the road on Wednesday night in Xiamen.

In the city of Quanzhou, trees extending nearly a hundred meters on the roadside were blown up, burying several parked cars and breaking a fire hydrant, from where torrential water kept gushing out.

Heavy rains-triggered floods also trapped residents in their apartments or working places.

At around 06:00 Thursday morning, a fire brigade in Xiamen rescued several people from a residential building with life jackets, life buoys and ropes. Video showed that cars parking next to a building were almost entirely submerged by rainwater.

At the same time, rescuers in Fuzhou saved three workers, who were trapped on the tin roof of a garage.

This fire squadron told the reporter that it received 11 emergency reports and rescued 53 people on Thursday morning.
