David Bowie dies of cancer aged 69: Animated tribute

LONDON — David Bowie, one of the most influential musicians of his era, has died of cancer, aged 69.

Bowie, who was born David Jones in London in 1947, shot to fame in 1969 with the release of Space Oddity.

However, it was Bowie's metamorphosis into his persona of bisexual alien rock star Ziggy Stardust in 1972 that captured the imagination and helped propel him to global superstardom.

Bowie's androgynous sexuality, costume and image changes over the years helped him take the rock world by storm.

He overcame a well-documented cocaine addiction to collaborate with some of the biggest names in music, including Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Brian Eno, Luther Vandross, Queen, Nile Rogers and Mick Jagger.

Although Bowie's popularity took a hit in the 1980s, he returned to form in the 1990s. His latest album, Blackstar was released on his 69th birthday on Friday to critical acclaim, just days before his death.

Aside from music, Bowie was a talented artist and acted in several productions on stage and screen, including a starring role in the 1986 sci-fi fantasy Labyrinth.

Bowie is survived by his second wife, the former model Iman, his son, film director Duncan Jones, and daughter, Alexandria Zahra Jones.
