SHEFFIELD, ENGLAND — A woman in Sheffield, England beat her attacker to a bloody pulp when he tried to rape her in the early morning hours of November 1, the Mirror reported.

The attempted rapist, Johnathon Holmes, was convicted of sexual assault and sentenced to four-and-a-half years in jail in a Sheffield Crown Court.

According to the Daily Mirror, Holmes, 35, was caught on CCTV hiding and watching women walking alone in the Sheffield city center during the afternoon. Holmes allegedly followed the victim for over a mile as she walked home alone at night. She crossed the street several times and realized Holmes was following her.

When she got out her phone to call her partner for help, she also took her keys out and tucked them in her fist for protection. Holmes pushed her into a bush and tried to stick his tongue in her mouth, but she bit down and punched him several times, stabbing him with her keys. Two witnesses overheard her cries for help, and Holmes fled, injuring himself while trying to hop a fence.

Police caught up with him around 1:30 a.m. Holmes claimed to not remember the incident because he was drunk. His mugshot shows the aftermath of the attack, which left him black and blue.

"What happened to me was my worst nightmare," the woman said, according to the Mirror. "The whole thing replayed in my head for days. Now going anywhere after dark is really stressful for me."
