Bolivia: LGBT Community Seeks Solidarity

Members of Bolivia’s LGBT community face special discrimination in their old age. The government has released a video featuring the experiences of elderly gay and transsexual people to help raise awareness. Many are not able to obtain health insurance and some are forced into prostitution after being abandoned by their families. But sex work is not recognized as such in Bolivia. There are no social benefits, no pension, no social services. In the face of discrimination, activists are asking for solidarity to help obtain more clinics and geriatric services. Dimitri O’Donnell reports from La Paz for teleSUR.
