Heaviest Israeli raids on Syria since start of civil war

Syrian state TV reported Israeli airstrikes in southern Syria killed six people and wounded seven in the Golan Heights in the heaviest Israeli bombardment since the start of Syria’s four-year-old civil war.

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF)says it targeted part of the Islamic Jihad cell it said was responsible for rocket attacks from Syria on Thursday (August 20).

Islamic Jihad denied involvement in the attacks.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Security wall under construction along border

Meanwhile, construction has started on a 45-kilometre wall along Turkey’s southern border with Syria. The Dogan (DHA) news agency said it is to help stop smuggling and illegal border crossings.

The wall is expected to be completed in three years.
