All of Me - Ellington 1959

One of the staples on any jazz concert by the Duke Ellington Orchestra was featuring alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges in “All of Me”.
The performance here in 1959 in Zurich, Switzerland is just another beautiful sample of Hodges lyrical tone, his sense of time and the relaxed way he plays the piece. I find the final outchorus where all the brass comes in very exciting but a bit on the loud side overplaying Hodges’ beautiful lines. I should not complain because it is definitely a tough job to mix the sound through the recording equipment, especially when the brass unexpectedly comes in with such force. In general, compliments to the recording engineers.
