A court has heard how an adventure holiday in Norway ended in a deadly polar bear attack in August 2011 and the tragic death of an 17-year old schoolboy. An inquest into the death of Horation Chapple heard how the camp leader tried to gouge out the bear's eyes during the bloody encounter.

The expedition camp headed for the Svalbard islands in Norway. The group stayed in tents surrounded by trip wires. However, the traps malfunctioned allowing the polar bear to attack the campers.

Michael Reid, the leader of the expedition said he heard someone shouting "bear attack" while he was sleeping. He rushed out the tent with a gun and attempted to fire four shots at the bear but the gun failed. The bear then turned on Reid, who tried to gouged out its eyes as it bit his head but was unsuccessful. In the end Reid managed to repair the gun and shoot the bear dead as it was on top of another camper.

According to the autopsy, the bear was a hungry old polar bear looking for food. It was also rare for polar bears to show up in summertime. The victim's lawyer said the incident could have been avoided if lookouts had been assigned in advance and kept an eye out for these dangerous creatures.
