Police conspiracy: Police officer calls in favor to protect his son after a hit and run death

In Taoyuan, a city outside of Taipei’s capital, two police officers and the Taoyuan police chief were arrested on charges of conspiracy. The son of an officer, Li Wenyi, was arrested for the hit and run death of a 22 year old university junior.
Earlier this year, while intoxicated Mr. Li struck the university student as she was driving home on her scooter. Instead of calling for help, Mr. Li phoned his father who then contacted two officers to go to the scene of the hit and run.
The officers were instructed to collect any security footage of the hit and run, which they did from a local restaurant just across the street and public CCTV footage. All of the footage was destroyed in an attempt to hide the fact that Mr. Li had killed the university student.
Yet, Mr. Li stupidly abandoned his car at the scene of the accident and upon further inspection by the prosecutor, the prosecutor requested that officers from outside of the Taoyuan precinct investigate the accident.
The girl’s parents are heartbroken and said that not only has the death of their daughter been hard on them, their trust in the government and police has also been shattered.
