Canadian police say the worst mass murder in over half a century in the city of Edmonton was probably an act of domestic violence.

The bodies of seven people were found at one house, two of them were children.

Another was found at a separate location.

Investigators said a man suspected of involvement in the murders later killed himself at a restaurant in a nearby town.

"According to family the male appeared depressed and overly emotional. The family was concerned that the male may be suicidal. Police arrived at the Northend residence and the male was not located and there was no response and nothing suspicious was noted at the residence. Further information was received and at 12.23am police returned to the Northend residence where they were able to gain entry and discovered seven deceased individuals."

Local media say police are treating eight of the nine deaths as homicide.
