Obama says women deserve equal pay for equal work

In his weekly address, U.S. President Barack Obama called the pay gap between men and women for the same work "an embarrassment".

"The average woman who works full-time in America earns less than a man - even when she is in the same profession and has the same education," he said. "That's wrong. In 2014, it's an embarrassment. Women deserve equal pay for equal work," he added.

Obama cited the Senate Republicans' rejection this week of the Paycheck Fairness Act and House Republicans' refusal to vote to raise the minimum wage, among others.

"Here's the problem, though. On issues that would benefit millions of women, Republicans in Congress have blocked progress at every turn," he said.
