Australia’s opposition leader accused of buying Twitter followers
With campaigning for the September 7th general election in full swing, one of the questions being raised on Australia’s political scene is has the opposition leader Tony Abbott bought fake followers and friends on social networks to boost his online popularity ratings?
According to blogger Llewellyn Stevens, the number of fans on Tony Abbott’s Facebook page has soared somewhat over the past few days, he had 36 000 a week ago and now has around 135 000. The web user thinks it’s too good to be true and has accused the leader of the Liberal Party of buying ‘likes’ on the social network.
The Australian press has been making similar accusations and has studied Tony Abbott’s Twitter account, pointing out that he has drawn tens of thousands of new followers over the weekend, and most of them it turns out are fake, automated ‘robot’ accounts. 
Faced with these controversial rumours the Liberal Party soon published a statement on social networks denying the claims, saying the party has not bought fake Twitter followers and has launched an investigation to try and find out who is behind the recent inflation in social media numbers.
