Scientist Who Discovered Ozone Hole Has Died

The scientist who discovered the ozone hole has died.

Joe Farman, one of the scientists who first called attention to a hole in the ozone layer of the atmosphere, has died at age 82.
Farman worked as a scientist for the British Antarctic Survey, and published the ozone hole related research back in 1985.

Farnman along with two of his colleagues concluded that there were a growing number of Chlorofluorocarbons, or CFC gases building up in the atmosphere, and that the chemicals may be the cause of a decrease in ozone concentration in the Antarctic.

He went on to be a crusader for environmental progress, criticizing both politicians and climate scientists alike.

The use of CFC chemicals was phased out by an international treaty known as the Montreal Protocol, banning their use as coolants or aerosol propellants in commercial products.

Although the chemicals take around a hundred years to decompose, last year the ozone hole in the Antarctic was reportedly the smallest it’s been in ten years.
