Packed ferry sinks near Indonesia

Survivors of a deadly ferry accident arrive at an Indonesia port.

Indonesian naval vessels rescued more than 200 people on Wednesday after a packed ferry collided with a cargo ship, and then sank in the Sunda Strait.

One local official said a total of six ships had picked up survivors, many of whom have already been taken to hospital.

Ferries are the most common means of transport for people wishing to travel around the 17,000 islands of Indonesia, where sea connections are cheaper and more available than air routes.

But safety standards are not strictly enforced and many ferries are overcrowded - resulting in a number of accidents each year.
