In 2009 former Taiwanese president Chen Shui-bian was jailed for 17 years for financial crimes. He is housed in a tiny cell where he sleeps on the floor with his cellmate.

Authorities say Chen gets preferential treatment. This means he gets one hour exercise time and up to 10 hours reading time per day. But after three years in jail, the 61-year old Chen is suffering numerous ailments that have lead his supporters to call for medical parole.
