The Brazilian government says huge hydroelectric projects underway in Amazonia will provide environmentally friendly electricity across the country. The operators say the projects will boost development in the areas where the power is to be generated.
But how clean will this energy really be? What are the costs? Critics say huge amounts of methane are released by rotting vegetation submerged in lakes behind dams,especially in tropical areas. We go to Porto Velho to investigate.
