The alliance of Angela Merkel and Nicolas Sarkozy (dubbed "Merkozy") is over. On May 6, French voters made Francois Hollande their new president. He and German Chancellor Angela Merkel have very different views on EU policy. Hollande has said he'll seek renegotiation of the European fiscal compact with the goal of fostering economic growth, not just austerity. Will the EU engine now start to splutter? Or will Merkel and Hollande join forces after all to form "Merklande"?
