At least 73 people were killed and as many as 1,000 injured after Egyptian soccer fans stormed the field in Port Said.

Witnesses say the fighting began after a fan of the visiting Al Ahli team ran on to the field with an iron bar. Al Masry fans responded by pouring onto the pitch and attacking Al-Ahli players. Many people were trampled by panicked crowds and several fans were reportedly thrown from higher levels of the stadium.

Hours later, many waited for updates about friends and family outside the local hospital.

News of the violence in Port Said prompted officials to halt a soccer match in Cairo. Angry fans responded by setting the stadium on fire.

Egyptian police say they've arrest 47 people in connection with the violence in Port Said.
