After deadly flash floods hit Southern France in June, many local mayors stand accused of issuing building permits for areas prone to flooding. The worst storm to affect the Var region in 180 years cost many people their lives. The area around Draguignan was one of the worst-affected. Five years ago the local environmental authority issued a report which pinpointed endangered locations. Yet, permits were issued and buildings constructed on these sites. The mayor, however, refuses to accept any responsibility for the disaster.
