There are few more emotive sounds than the cry of the muezzin calling the faithful to prayer. But in Istanbul over-amplified and tinny external speakers, combined with some fairly unimpressive vocal skills, have led to complaints from the neighbors. Now the mufti of Istanbul has stepped in: The muezzins have been ordered to take lessons to improve their voices.
