A band of rain and hill snow will push northwards across England and Wales, working its way into Scotland through the afternoon, with some heavy spells in places. Some blustery showers with a chance of hail this afternoon further south, with Northern Ireland and most of Scotland seeing some drier, colder spells. – This is the Met Office UK Weather forecast for the afternoon of 01/03/24. 00:00 Hello there, good afternoon. It's going to be staying cold through the rest of the day
00:04 across the UK with a further risk of outbreaks of heavy rain and some further hill snow.
00:09 We've got low pressure in charge and will be staying with us all the way through the
00:12 weekend as well and a dive of cold air wrapped around that low pressure as well as these
00:17 occluded fronts. Now these occluded fronts is where we're seeing the focus of the heaviest
00:22 rain and that risk of hill snow we have seen through this morning and through the rest
00:26 of the day as well. That's where that focus will be. So those bands will push into more
00:30 northern areas of England and then into southern Scotland later on this afternoon. So above
00:34 around 200 metres is where we've got the greatest risk of seeing some snow falling. So that
00:38 does bring a risk to some sleety accumulations on higher road surfaces. So do take care if
00:44 you're travelling in these areas through this afternoon. Further south it will turn somewhat
00:48 drier but it's still going to be a fairly unsettled afternoon with a risk of quite blustery
00:52 showers that could still fall as snow over the high ground. There's also a risk of hail
00:56 in there as well. Further north across Northern Ireland and many areas of Scotland it should
01:00 stay dry through much of this afternoon but there's a cold northerly wind so it will still
01:05 be feeling cold wherever you are out there this afternoon with a risk of some quite gusty
01:10 winds particularly across the south coast. It will stay fairly unsettled throughout tonight
01:16 as well. This band will push likely into northern areas of Scotland bringing a risk of some
01:21 snow to higher areas overnight tonight. Further south it should be dry through this evening
01:26 but through the early hours of Saturday morning this area of rain will move into the south
01:31 coast and then up towards the Midlands by the start of Saturday. This brings a risk
01:35 of some snow to higher ground mostly but there is a chance of a couple of centimetres to
01:40 lower levels by the start of Saturday. So there will be quite a lot of cloud around
01:45 overnight so frost is going to be limited but it's still going to be quite a cold start
01:48 to the day. There's still a risk of ice on any wet surfaces as well so it's going to
01:52 be a bit of a cold start to the weekend and for many areas of central England and then
01:57 northern areas of England later on in the day it's going to be quite a wet and cloudy
02:02 day and there's further risk of snow over the higher ground here. Elsewhere though it'll
02:07 be fairly cloudy and cold as I said but there'll be a risk of showers and still a chance of
02:12 some drier weather from time to time but we've still got that colder air and many areas will
02:16 be seeing quite a brisk breeze as well so it will feel fairly chilly throughout much
02:21 of Saturday. As we head towards the end of the weekend and into Sunday we will see a
02:26 ridge of higher pressure developing which will bring a drier, brighter and warmer day
02:32 on Sunday. See you later.
