Hawaiian salt makers combat climate change, pollution

The Taniguchi family, among 22 dedicated to the Hawaiian cultural practice of ‘paakai’ (salt-making), faces ongoing threats to their sacred salt patch, including development, pollution, sand erosion, and climate change. The traditional salt-making season has been significantly impacted, lasting only three months due to above-average rainfall, with climate change posing a potential threat to the continuation of this cultural and spiritual tradition.
