IPCC: what to learn from the latest report on the climate emergency
  • 2 years ago
The body autonomous body body of the UN responsible for on climate climate issues has published the third part of its report on the climate emergency.
The observation is alarming: global warming has already already irreversible impacts.
But all is not lost: the IPCC proposes solutions to slow down global warming, but these must be be put in place very quickly.
What are the main points of this new report?
- Greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced by at least 50% by 2030
- The use of coal must be completely stopped by 2050
- The use of oil and gas must decrease by at least 70% by 2050
- Renewable energies must be developed
- Financing must be increased (to reach a budget 3 to 6 times higher than at present) to limit warming to +35.6°F
- Financing must be increased (to reach a budget 3 to 6 times higher than at present) to limit warming to +35.6°F
- Additional efforts are expected on transportation (promote electric vehicles and public transportation, limit the use of the car, choosing the train over the plane...)
- Lifestyles and consumption and production habits must be changed (circular economy, better waste management and recycling of materials...)
- We must rely on new technologies to eliminate CO2 emissions
Greenhouse gas emissions have never been so high.
Only 24 countries have managed to reduce their emissions, but their efforts have been offset by the growth of emissions in the rest of the world.
The report denounces the failure of political leaders in the fight against climate change and sounds the alarm: they must become aware of the climate emergency in order to put in place appropriate policies.
