The internationally award-winning Academic Women’s Choir of the College of Culture and Arts in Mykolaiv, Ukraine performed, “Psalm 22 (Greek),” at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Christ the Savior in Mykolaiv in 2013. The College is located at Faleevskaya, 5 in Mykolaiv. The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Christ the Savior is located at Admiral Street, 12, Mykolaiv.
This piece was part of a series of pieces that the choir performed at the Fifth International Competition of Choral and Sacred Music in Rome, Italy, July 3-6, 2013. The Women’s Academic Choir earned a gold cup, the Gold IV diploma and Gold V diploma at this competition. As a result of such achievement, the choir qualified to compete at INTERKULTUR World Choir Games, The Champions Competition, World Choir Championships, The Champions Round, Grand Prix of Choral Music, for the next 5 years.
Following this, the Folk Choir, which includes members of the Women’s Academic Choir, earned second place at the Fourteenth International Competition of Chamber Choirs, which was held in Marktoberdorf, Germany in May 2015.
The director of the Women’s Academic Choir and Folk Choir, Tetyana Anatoliyov Ostrovskaya, is an Associate Professor of Music at the Mykolaiv College of Culture and Arts. She is the recipient of both the Taras Shevchenko Ukrainian National Prize and the Order of Merit - Svetlana Hryhorivna Fominykh. As director of the Women’s Academic Choir, T. A. Ostrovskaya was awarded the diploma of, “Best Conductor of the Competition,” at the Fifth International Competition of Choral and Sacred Music in Rome, Italy in 2013.
As of March 2022, the Women’s Academic Choir is in its fifty-second year of existence.
The composer of “Psalm 22,” is Victoria Vita Polevá (also spelled: Poleváya). In Ukrainian, her name is spelled: Вікторія Польова.
The Book of Psalms is largely attributed to King David on account of him being a poet-musician, and being described as, “the sweet psalmist of Israel,” in 2 Samuel 23:1. Numbering of the Psalms differs, in most cases, by just one, between Greek and Hebrew manuscripts. Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholic translations use the Greek numbering system while the Saint Joseph edition of the New American Bible approved by Pope Paul VI in 1970 and the Anglican, Lutheran, and Calvinist translations adhere to the Hebrew numbering system.
In 2001, Ms. Poleva composed this complex and avant-garde modern spiritual. It is a composition for soprano and women’s choir that incorporates the psalm of King David of Judah/Israel that pictures the Lord as the Great Shepherd. He provides for his sheep. He protects his sheep and is a constant companion for them. The Lord Jesus Christ is the Great Shepherd, as referenced in the following New International Version Scripture passages:
