Henry Thies (1893-1935) was a violinist and bandleader, mainly active in Cincinnati (Ohio). Very little biographical information is available about him. Fortunately, I came across an excerpt from The Cincinnati Enquirer of April 17th, 1932. According to that article, Thies filled a longer engagement in Cincinnati than any other organization, (i.e. from 1924 and onwards). He discovered many playing artists as well as vocalists Don Dewey (who is also singing on this side) and Charles Dameron. Thies’ first engagement in Cincinnati was the opening of the Dream Gardens at Castle Farm. After leaving the Dream Garden, Thies played at the opening of the Sinton Hotel’s Club Chatterbox. With the arrival of summer, he played in the Moonlight Gardens at Coney Island. After two years of Coney Island in the summer and the Sinton Hotel in the winter, he was prevailed upon to enter the radio field. Leaving radio work, Thies was engaged by the Gibson Hotel for a two weeks’ engagement. But so great was his success that he was prevailed upon to extend his engagement for four more weeks. At the moment the press article was published, his band comprising 16 musicians and two singing acts, was about to go on a tour, filling concert and dance palace engagements in, a.o. Lafayette, Ind., an extended engagement in New Orleans, after which is was to accept a proposition either in New York or Chicago. However, in the three years that followed, several setbacks leaving him in despair led to his untimely death in 1935. As for this lovely rendition, it was recorded in 1929. Vocal by Don Dewey.
