This appears to be one of the most obscure bandleaders I have come across. He was active in Cincinnati, Ohio from around 1920 through the mid-thirties. Although hardly any biographical data are available, according to music investigator David N. Lewis he appears to have enjoyed a reasonable success and even toured Japan and a few other Asian countries in 1924 and 1925. Lewis also suggests that during his stay in Japan, Spindler may well have recorded "Walla Walla" (composition credited to 'Nitto/King') under the pseudonym "Nitto Jazz Band". The sheet music covers I found also suggest a certain renown in his day. However, this seems to be the only side that can be credited to him, and even this one is not sure. Indeed, allegedly Spindler recorded "Wabash Blues" and "South Sea Isle" for Gennett in 1921, which were privately issued, but this record is quite mysterious. Sam Lanin also recorded "Wabash Blues" and "Leave Me With a Smile" in November of 1921, which were issued on Gennett 4796 - but copies of this record have been found where the label credits one or both sides to "Harry Spindler and His Hotel Sinton Orchestra of Cincinnati." Aural examination shows that the music is the same, whatever the label says. The Gennett recording ledgers state it is Lanin. Anyhow, the tune presented in this video was recorded in 1925.
