A king cobra was caught hiding inside a car engine after fleeing from a family's pet dog.

The serpent slithered across the front yard of the home in Saraburi, central Thailand, on February 22.

But the family's pet dog began barking and chased away the deadly reptile, which took refuge inside the white Mazda.

Motorist Prapaiphon Thipdee, 19, said she was shocked to see the 13ft long snake slithering into the vehicle while she was walking out to see what the noise was.

Prapaiphon said: "I heard lots of barking then I saw the snake fleeing from the dog. It went under the car then climbed up into the engine.''

The teenager later called the emergency services, who arrived and caught the cobra with their bare hands.

Footage taken by a rescuer Tanakorn Chuennok shows two reptile catchers pulling the cobra out of the car engine. Neighbors clamoured to see the serpent and record the incident on their phones.

The fierce cobra was put into a sack and will be released into the jungle.

Tanakorn said: "This is the biggest king cobra we have ever seen in our village."
