Youths in west India dance, eat and lash themselves with fire for festival

In a unique tradition from one village in west India, young men were seen dancing and flagellating themselves with burning logs.

In this tradition, from the village of Nirupan in Navsari, Gujarat, youths play and dance with burning coals in their hand, as well as eating and hitting themselves with fiery coals.

The people of Nirupan with burning coals and fire just before harvest season, often while dancing to devotional songs.

This tradition was celebrated on the night of October 20. According to one villager: "This is a old tradition and we pray to Goddess Malvi for better harvest."
