Surgeon Behavior
Linked to Patient
Outcome in New Study The study was published
in the Journal of the American
Medical Association Surgery. Four types of bad
behavior were the
focus of the study: failure to follow through on
professional responsibilities, unclear
or disrespectful communication, poor
or unsafe care and lack of integrity. Researchers analyzed
post-operation reports
on close to 13,700 patients. They found that the
patients of surgeons with one
or more unprofessional behavior
reports over the previous three years, had a 12%-14%
increase in likelihood of
post-surgery complications. Study authors call the
findings a "strong increase," but
are quick to point out that a "vast majority"
of surgeons take care of their patients.
