A 57-year-old man in Germany was given a life sentence for putting poison on his coworkers' lunches, reports the New York Times. Identified only as Klaus 0., he was reportedly caught on camera sprinkling a powdered substance onto a colleague's sandwich.  According to the BBC, testing revealed the powder was acetate, which can cause significant damage to organs.
Two individuals at his workplace did reportedly end up with chronic kidney issues. Another is said to have fallen into a mercury-induced coma and has been diagnosed with lasting brain damage. According to the Associated Press, a search of Klaus O.'s home revealed "a primitive chemistry laboratory in the basement and a substance that [the judge] described as 'more dangerous than all combat agents used in World War II.'"  Klaus O. did not speak during his trial, so his motive is unclear.  Sky News reports: "Prosecutors believe he wanted to see his colleagues' physical decline."
