NewsX special: Proposal to allow prisoners to enjoy family life in Punjab - NewsX

In a first for the country, Punjab Police is mulling to allow jail inmates with proven record of good behaviour to stay with their family members within the prison complex for a couple of days. What is the intent behind putting a criminal behind bars? Isn't the basic idea to deny a person his liberty so he does not enjoy the pleasures of everyday living and repents at leisure? But winds of change are blowing. Punjab may soon become the first state in the country to allow conjugal visits in jails. Even as the High Court is also hearing a petition on the matter. So we ask- Is granting conjugal rights to prisoners justified if there are sufficient safeguards? We debate the question in the show and try to reach an agreement among our panelists over the issue.
