Nicki Minaj Calls Herself the New Harriet Tubman Ahead of the VMA's

Nicki Minaj has been criticised for comparing herself to legendary slave activist Harriet Tubman.

The 35-year old rapper was caught on camera saying, “I am the new Harriet Tubman”, just hours after tweeting about her in the run up to the MTV Video Music Awards on Monday night.

One follower tweeted: “Comparing your album sales to Harriet Tubman’s fight for freedom is the most stupid commentary on slavery in 2018 and that includes Kanye saying slavery was a choice”

Another wrote, “I’m not sure if there’s a person in the US alive today who can respectfully compare themself to ‘Harriet Tubman.'”

Tubman was born into slavery in 1822 and later escaped before launching a series of daring raids which helped free approximately 70 other slaves. She later helped campaign for women's suffrage and died in 1913 as one of the most famous African Americans in history.
