Entire Thai Soccer Team Rescued
From Cave 12 boys and their soccer coach were trapped deep within a cave complex for a grueling
18 days. The ordeal claimed the life of an experienced diver and riveted people around the world. Thailand’s Navy SEALs were central to the rescue effort. Referring to boys by their team name, the Wild Boars, the SEALS made the announcement that all 13 were safe on their Facebook page. They were trapped in the Tham Luang cave on June 23, while exploring after a soccer practice. The complex became flooded by monsoon rains and the boys, ages 11 to 16, have no
diving experience. Ten days passed before they were discovered by a pair of British divers, alive and huddled on a steep rock. Cave-diving experts had warned it was potentially too risky to dive the youngsters out. But Thai officials knew that the boys could be trapped for months by monsoon rains. A massive water pumping effort and relatively mild weather provided a window of opportunity. Against the odds and under global scrutiny, rescuers and Thailand’s Navy SEALs transformed opportunity into success. Narongsak Osatanakorn, rescue effort leader at a news conference
