Sikh man shot in Washington, told to ‘go back to your own country’

KENT, WASHINGTON — Police in Kent, Washington are searching for a suspect who shot a Sikh man on Friday evening in an alleged hate crime.
According to the Seattle Times, the 39-year-old Sikh man was cleaning his car in his driveway in Kent’s East Hill neighborhood on Friday evening when a 6-foot-tall white man with a mask covering the lower half of his face reportedly approached.
An altercation ensued and the white man yelled “go back to your own country” before allegedly pushing victim to the ground. The suspect then pulled out a gun and opened fire at the victim.
The victim was identified as Deep Rai on Sunday. He is a U.S. national of Indian origin. Rai was shot in the arm, but is expected to make a full recovery.
Kent police said in a news conference broadcasted by KIRO that they are treating the shooting as a very serious incident, and it is being investigated as a hate crime.
