A beam of light shooting from the summit of Rangitoto Island stopped some people in their tracks - but it was all in the name of art.
The light display began on Friday night, when an array of powerful lights mounted near the summit of Rangitoto Island, shone from the Island from 10pm to 12am.
The stunning sight made some people wonder what was going on.
However the beam was an installation designed to help celebrate Auckland's Maori culture.
