Bullied Japanese schoolgirl seriously injured in 4-storey suicide attempt

A bullied Japanese girl was seriously injured in a failed suicide attempt after leaping from a 4-storey building in a housing complex in Kagoshima Prefecture, according to a Wednesday report in the Yomiuri Shimbun.

The girl jumped from the building shortly after leaving home for the third semester opening ceremony on the morning of January 8. She is said to have been seriously injured in the suicide attempt, breaking several bones. She is now hospitalised in a stable condition. A suicide note, reading "I've had enough. I can't go on any longer." was left at the scene.

The girl is said to have sought advice from her supervisor last November, complaining that her notebook was seen by classmates without her permission. In a report about the bullying in late December she wrote that "everyone laughed at me."

The girl asked the assistant principal and supervisor to survey classmates about the bullying. The local education authority is looking into how the bullying, that is thought to be behind her suicide attempt, started.
