Luis Fernando Sanchez Arellano, a leader of the once-powerful Arellano Felix cartel, was caught off guard and arrested by the Mexican army on Monday afternoon while watching a World Cup game.
Nicknamed 'the Engineer', Sanchez Arellano was watching the game between Mexico and Croatia at a house in Tijuana. According to photos provided by the Interior Ministry, the gangster was wearing a green football jersey and his cheeks were painted with the Mexican flag.
In the middle of the match, Mexican soldiers made their way into the house and captured him. Sanchez Arellano had $100,000 cash with him at the time of his arrest.
Mexican authorities did not provide further details on Sanchez Arellano's arrest. The game he was watching ended with Mexico beating Croatia 3-1, enabling Mexico to enter the World Cup's last 16.
Sanchez Arellano, believed to be in his 30s, took the helm of the cartel after his uncle Javier Arellano Felix was arrested by the U.S. Coast Guard in 2006. He is now serving a 40-year term in a U.S. federal prison in San Diego.
The Arellano Felix cartel once dominated the underworld of Tijuana, but its influence waned as the Sinaloa cartel gradually took over the area.
