Bird strike? Pilot avoids plane accident by landing jet with one engine after other catches fire

An Air India flight bound for Mumbai landed safely in New Jersey on Sunday, after being forced to return to Newark Liberty International Airport because its left engine caught fire, according to a Reuters report.
Authorities say the Boeing 777-300ER took off from Newark at around 4:35 p.m. Shortly after takeoff, the pilot reported that the left engine of the plane had caught fire. The engine next shut down and ceased to function.
The pilot managed to circle back and landed the aircraft safely in Newark Liberty International Airport at around 5:05 p.m. with only one engine.
The plane was reportedly carrying 313 people, including 18 business class passengers, 274 in economy class and 21 crew members.
The pilot ordered an ambulance be placed on standby in case of injuries. The plane experienced a rough landing and blew several tires, but there were no reported injuries.
Newark Airport officials initially stated the engine fire was caused by a bird strike, but Port Authority of New York and New Jersey spokeswoman Erica Dumas later said animal interference had been ruled out. The exact reason for the engine fire is currently being investigated.
Dumas told reporters that Air India was arranging alternative flights for its passengers.
