UK Vs ISIS: RAF ready to send Tornado GR4 fighter bombers to northern Iraq

Britain’s Royal Air Force will deploy six Tornado GR4 fighter bombers to attack Islamic State targets in northern Iraq after the UK Parliament voted to join the U.S.-led airstrikes.

The Tornado GR4 has been in service for the Royal Air Force for more than three decades. It is a two-seater aircraft that is 16.72 metres long and has a wingspan of 8.6 metres.

It features a Mauser BK-27 revolver cannon on each side of the fuselage. The bomber can carry up to five Paveway IV missiles or two Stormshadow cruise missiles. It can also be loaded with other weapons, such as Brimstone missiles and the Reconnaissance Airborne Pod Tornado.

Tornado GR4 is equipped with the Litening III laser targeting and reconnaissance pod. Its multiple sensors allow the warplane to scan and locate targets even in bad weather.

The Tornado GR4 can fly at speeds of up to Mach 2.2 when cruising at 30,000 feet. Its speed is reduced as it reaches maximum altitude of 50,000 feet.

The fighter bombers have been carrying out surveillance missions in the Middle East for the past six weeks and could begin airstrikes over the weekend according to Sky News.
