Canada parliament shooting: shooter identified as Michael Zehaf-Bibeau

Canadian officials have identified the gunman who shot and killed a soldier at the National War Memorial in Ottawa on Wednesday as Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, a recent Muslim convert who had a history of drug use.

The attack began at the National War Memorial shortly before 10 a.m. Bibeau was wearing a keffiyeh when he opened fire with a rifle at the soldiers standing guard, firing at least two shots, CNN reported.

Bibeau then fled the scene by car and drove to the doors of Parliament Hill’s Centre Block, where he entered the Hall of Honour in the parliament, exchanging gunfire with armed police, CNN reported.

He was fatally shot by Sergeant-at-Arms Kevin Vickers, CBC reported. Bibeau was recently designated a high-risk traveller and his passport had been seized by the Canadian government, the Globe and Mail reported.
