US asks Vietnam to stop allowing Russia to use Cam Ranh Bay base to refuel Tu-95 “Bear” bombers

Washington has asked Vietnam not to allow Russia to use a former U.S. base to refuel bombers on 'provocative' flights near Guam.

Russian nuclear-capable bombers had been flying in the Asia-Pacific region, including the U.S-controlled Guam, ever since the country annexed Crimea last March.

U.S. officials confirmed that Russian tankers had flown from the naval base in Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam to refuel the bombers circling Guam.

The naval base of Cam Ranh Bay is home to three Russian-made submarines. The Vietnamese Navy has ordered two more from Russia.

The rise of China has threatened Vietnam's security, prompting the country to deepen ties with the U.S. while remaining close to Russia, a Cold-War ally in defense and energy cooperation.

The U.S. has not revealed when the flights took place or how many planes were involved. The Vietnamese government has not responded to Reuters, which broke the story.
