An Airbus A320 operated by Lufthansa's budget Germanwings airline with 150 people on board crashed into the French Alps on Tuesday morning after an unexplained, rapid descent.

Germanwings flight 9525 was traveling with 144 passengers and six crew members from Barcelona to Dusseldorf on Tuesday. Forty-four minutes into the flight, the plane began fell from 11,582 metres to 2,111 metres in eight minutes.

An air traffic control tower in Marseilles lost radio contact with the plane at 10:53 a.m. local time when the plane reached 2,111 metres.

The plane crashed into France's Estrop Mountain. The crash site is at an altitude of 2,700 metres on the steep mountainside. French officials say there are probably no survivors.

According to Lufthansa, the 24-year-old Airbus underwent a routine technical check earlier this week and underwent a major inspection in 2013. The pilot had more than 10 years' flying experience and had recorded more than 6,000 hours' flying time.
