A dog named Derby is living a great life thanks to his human family and 3D printed prosthetics. Things weren’t always so good for him, though.

Derby’s former owners were unsure of how to help him, as he was born with deformities in his front legs. They decided to send him to a facility where he would be euthanized.

Fortunately for him that didn’t happen, as the owner of Peace and Paws Dog Rescue heard of his plight and decided to take him in. He was later fostered by a woman named Tara Anderson, who is the Director of Product Management at Massachusetts-based company 3D Systems.

Although Darby was getting around with a set of wheels, Anderson knew he needed something more that would allow him to move about more freely. She and her co-workers began designing varying 3D prosthetic models.

The team decided on so-called ‘elbow cups’ which allow him to run easily. Initially, Derby experienced discomfort while wearing the cups, but adjustments were made and he seems to have gotten accustomed to them.

This past summer, Derby landed a forever home and his new owners are making sure he’s making good use out of the prosthetics and getting some energy out.
