Residents in South Australia recently stumbled upon a heartbreaking discovery. Seven sperm whales were found beached on Yorke Peninsula.

Six of the whales were scattered along a beach and at the time they were first spotted, it was low tide. The seventh was later discovered near a jetty.

One resident, 32-year-old Lauren Carty told news.com.au “They’re big whales, all between eight and ten metres long, you can see them from the road.. None of them are moving. I think it was just too late.”

According to another local named John, the whales became beached while chasing fish. John claimed the school navigated close to the shore and the big creatures followed. As a result, they were left stranded on the sands or in shallow water.

Senior research scientist Cath Kemper from the South Australian Museum said she has never seen a group of beached sperm whales in her 30-year long career at the facility.

Kemper also pointed out the whales had a slim chance of survival once out of the water, due to damage inside their bodies. John claimed the school navigated close to the shore and the big creatures followed.

The removal of the carcasses has not yet been scheduled.
