Window washers dangling from WTC heroically rescued

A heroic ending to a terrifying afternoon in Manhattan.

Two window washers dangling almost vertically from the 68th floor of the One World Trade Center are pulled to safety by rescuers.

They had been hanging outside New York City's tallest building for two hours.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) DANIEL NIGRO, FDNY COMMISSIONER, SAYING:

"Firefighters went to the roof and to the 68th floor. From the roof they dropped rope down to additionally secure the members, that were the workers on the scaffold. They dropped a radio down so that they could communicate and they began cutting the glass. There are three layers of glass. Two inner layers were cut first with diamond saws. When they were finished with that, at no time were the people on the scaffolds unsecured. They were secured both by their own belts and by the ropes from the roof.
