Chubb-Steinberg Orchestra of Cincinnati - Because They All Love You

This orchestra, led by Art Hicks, is yet another of those bands that are almost totally forgotten today and information about is rather scarce. Bert Allen was first cornet. The musician usually known by his alias "Ray Evan" in the sax section is Otis Neirouter. Pianist Jack Saatkamp was a bandleader in his own right and was later a staff member of WLW radio in Cincinnati for many years. The band was sponsored by the Chubb-Steinberg Radio and Music Store on Sixth Street in Cincinnati. In about 1930, Chubb went into the public address system business but Ely Steinberg built the company into a chain of appliance stores that went out of business about a decade ago. Gennett set up demonstration recording / broadcasting studio at the Cincinnati Radio Show in March 1925 and had the Chubb-Steinberg Orchestra record the song featured in the video for the audience. Gennett had been begun recording in Cincinnati the previous year, in a makeshift studio housed in the Starr Piano Company store. Chubb-Steinberg’s “Because They All Love You” was issued (Gennett 5663 and Claxtonola 40421), and the Gennett label states, “Played – Recorded – Broadcast at the Cincinnati Radio Show.” However, the issue version was not the recording made at the Radio Show (the wax master would have been destroyed when it was played back for the audience), and there is no indication that any alternate takes were made at the demo. Rather, the issued version had been made several weeks before the show, at Starr’s Richmond, Indiana studio on February 16, 1925, according to the Gennett ledgers.
