An attack from inside Syria Sunday kills a 15-year-old in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

It's the first fatality on Israel's side of the frontier since the Syrian civil war began more than three years ago.

Israelis responded with tank fire at Syrian army positions in answer to what an Israeli military spokesman describes as an intentional attack.

A military spokesman says it's not yet clear whether a roadside bomb, an artillery shell or mortar round, fired from Syria was responsible.

The spillover from the Syrian civil war into the Golan Heights comes as U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry met earlier with his Egyptian counterpart in Cairo, where he raised concerns about the region.
