Cracks Appear in the Willis Tower Skydeck Ledge

The Ledge attraction at Chicago’s Willis Tower recently showed some cracks in one of its all-glass observation boxes.
Chicago’s Willis Tower features an attraction called the Ledge, which consists of four all glass boxes that jut out over 1300 feet above the city.
The view down can be terrifying enough, but some California tourists got an extra dose of adrenaline when they stepped onto the clear floor and heard a cracking sound coming from beneath them.
A quick glance down revealed that there were in fact small fissures on the box’s lower surface.
Following the incident, a spokesman was quick to clarify that there was indeed some cracking, but it in no way compromised the structural integrity of the suspended observation deck.
The only part of the floor that was affected, he said, was the clear resin topcoat.
Notably, according to the construction chief, even if all of the three half-inch glass plates shatter, the floor can still support up to 10 thousand pounds.
Shortly after the cracks appeared, crews were on the scene assessing the situation.
The longer-term plan is to replace the resin layer.
