A young women is condemned to death for murder. She has proof that she was not the killer, but revealing the truth would ruin her lover's life. She instead relies on her lover's conscience leading him to reveal the truth.

This film was very influential in its day, being one of the first example of a film told in a non-linear series of flashbacks and flash forward. It is also noted for have a poster which has often be listed among the top 5 of all time.
