If winning Delhi is the biggest challenge for Narendra Modi, the second biggest task for the Gujarat CM would be to strike a balance between two of his closest aides — revenue minister Anandiben Patel and former MoS (home) Amit Shah — in the eventuality of him becoming PM. Patel and Shah are intense rivals in the Modi camp and would like an equal share of the spoils.
Sources say while Patel could replace Modi as Gujarat CM, the BJP's PM pick seems to be undecided about Shah, who has been nursing the battleground state of Uttar Pradesh. While the possibility of Shah becoming the party's national president is not being ruled out — even though many leaders believe he is too junior for the top job — Modi may have his Man Friday as minister of state in the PMO.
